A good baseline for Los Angeles homes
Twice a year works for most homes. The key windows are late fall, once nearby trees have dropped their leaves, and again just before the first winter rains so water has a clear path off the roof.
In Southern California the rainy season is short but intense, and gutters that overflow during a storm can send water into places you do not want it.
When you need more frequent cleaning
Tree cover is the biggest factor. Homes near the foothills of Sierra Madre, Altadena, and La Canada Flintridge fill up faster and may need three or four visits a year.
- Pine, oak, or deodar cedar dropping needles and leaves year round
- Overhanging branches directly above the roofline
- Recent wind events that pack debris into the gutters
- Homes without gutter guards that catch everything
Why clogged gutters are a problem
When gutters clog, water backs up and overflows the edge. That water can seep behind fascia boards, into eaves, and down foundation walls, leading to rot, staining, and costly repairs.
Standing debris also holds moisture against the roof edge and can attract pests. A routine cleaning is far cheaper than the damage a full gutter can cause.
Signs your gutters need attention now
You do not always have to wait for the schedule. Look for these signs.
- Water spilling over the edge during rain
- Plants or grass sprouting from the gutter
- Sagging or pulling away from the roofline
- Stains or streaks on the siding below the gutter
- Birds or pests nesting in the debris
